More of Him, Less of Me: Living as God's Vessel

Serving in ministry, I’ve noticed how easily pride can sneak in. You wonder if anyone noticed what you did, if you will get recognition or accolades for faithfully following God. But the question we have to ask ourselves is this: Am I serving so people see me, or so they see Christ?
We have a great example in John the Baptist. He understood his role clearly: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30) John knew that his purpose was to point others to Jesus and so he didn’t cling to recognition or attention.
Our calling is the same: to lift Christ higher, even if it means stepping out of the spotlight.
Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4:7 that “we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” A jar of clay isn’t valuable on its own, it’s the treasure inside that gives it worth.
The same is true of us: the value of our lives isn’t in how impressive we appear, but in how faithfully we carry the presence of Christ to others.
Pride can show up quietly -- in the desire for thanks, recognition, or approval. But when we serve with God’s glory as the focus, we leave behind fingerprints that aren’t ours, they’re His.
I recently had the privilege of serving on the inside team with KAIROS prison ministry at a women’s facility. It was a truly humbling experience, and I was reminded that eternal impact doesn’t depend on my name being remembered, but on His name being lifted high.
Decreasing isn’t about losing value; it’s about gaining freedom. The freedom to let Christ shine fully through us. My prayer is that we would live as vessels of His love. So that when people look at us, they see Him clearly.
Lord, teach me to serve with humility and joy. Help me release my need for recognition and instead reflect Your glory in all I do. Let my words, actions, and attitude point others to You. May my life be a vessel that carries Your love into every place You send me. Amen.
Where might God be calling you to step back so that His light can shine through more clearly? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
