If You're Living, You're Learning.

I started studying Scripture, truly studying instead of just reading, almost 25 years ago. That journey has taken me through countless passages, stories, and teachings. And yet, even after all this time, I am continually amazed by how much more there is to discover.

Familiar verses I thought I knew are sometimes illuminated in new ways. Truths I thought I understood suddenly deepen. Concepts I’ve studied before reveal fresh insights.

Through this ongoing experience, one thing has become clear:                                                            if you’re living, you’re learning.

I’ve learned to embrace this simple but profound truth: God reveals things to us when we’re ready to receive them, or when we need them most. Spiritual growth has its own beautiful rhythm. Some lessons come early. Some take decades to unfold. But they always arrive right on time for the exact season we’re walking through.

God’s wisdom is infinite, and He shares it generously as we continue walking with Him.

Recently, I started a daily study with a close friend, focusing on the names of God. I was interested because there is such a richness in the Hebrew titles for God. English translates most as LORD or God, but there is so much more depth in Elohim, Adonai, El Shaddai. These names highlight and honor the many facets of God’s character.

For the first two weeks, we explored names and attributes I was already familiar with. Some felt like comfortable reminders, confirming truths I already knew.

But there were also moments of surprise, details I hadn’t noticed before, or fresh insights into names I thought I fully understood. I felt grateful for the chance to relearn and deepen my understanding of God’s character.

But then on day 15 the study delivered a revelation that humbled and excited me. We studied the name Jehovah Sabaoth (sah-bee-oth), meaning “The LORD of Hosts” or “The LORD of Armies.”

Somehow, in 25 years of reading and study, this was a Hebrew title I had never encountered even though it is the most frequent divine name used. Discovering something completely new after decades of learning was a profound reminder of God’s vastness. I realized how little I truly know, and how much more He has yet to show me. That no matter how long we’ve studied or how much we think we know, there is always more of God’s majesty to explore.

I pondered how awesome God is, that He has all knowledge and He chooses to impart it to us, as we are ready to learn.

Then I got to the next day in the study, another new name: El Deah, “The God of Knowledge.” And again, I was reminded that every new insight, every revelation, is truly a gift. Our all-knowing God delights in sharing His knowledge with us, in revealing more of Himself to us, bit by bit, day by day.

Each moment of study becomes a chance to experience a little more of His wisdom and a little more of His grace.

If there’s one lesson my journey has taught me, it’s that spiritual learning never ends. As long as we’re alive, and as long as we’re seeking, God will keep expanding our hearts, minds, and spirits.

Whether you’ve been studying Scripture for decades or you’re just beginning your journey, remember this: there are always new depths to discover, and God is faithful to reveal them in His perfect timing.

If you’re living, you’re learning. And with God, the adventure never truly ends.

Where has God surprised you with a new insight lately, big or small?

What area of your life might God be inviting you to keep learning and growing in right now?

Have you ever seen God reveal something right when you needed it most?

Share your thoughts in the comments…I would love to hear from you!
